Who can deny the perennial appeal of adding a new video editing and effects plug-in to the mix, that special sauce or seasoning that automates a complicated task, speeds up workflow or gives you access to some blisteringly cool effect you never dreamed you could create? With this in mind, we set out to compile an updated version list of downloadable plug-ins. But we didn’t stop there. The companion tutorials and quick tips by experts and product managers alike give you more insight on how to use some of the most popular plugs to save time and customize out-the-box effects.

The directory of products is limited to widely available commercial plug-ins for video editing and compositing. Due to limited space, we couldn’t include full listings for animation and 3D effects plug-ins here. We will, however, add to this list and expand plug-in categories over time online at a special plug-in zone you will find at both www.studiomonthly.com and www.studiodaily.com. Some popular plugs still in use are no longer available for purchase, and therefore did not make it onto our list. If you have beloved copies of GrangerFX’s TrinityFX, which resurrected Play’s 3D video transitions several years ago, or Pinnacle’s Hollywood FX, keep using them. But there is a deep and varied range of killer plugs to push you in new directions here.

We chose not to list plug-ins that are now only available bundled within popular editing and effects packages. Many great plug-ins have gone this route and one only has to start working with After Effects 7 to rediscover old friends and some exciting new tools. Each listing is for sets of products available for individual purchase. And don’t forget that many of the developers listed below also offer excellent freeware, so it pays, er, saves to visit their company Web sites and shareware communities. Scott Frizzle’s fun and free Quaker, Impacticular, Splaticular and Spermticular (think digital fertility) plugs for After Effects don’t appear here, but can be found at www.scottfrizzle.com/free_quake.html. Graeme Nattress, a member of the RED camera team and the creator of some great film-look plug-ins for Final Cut Pro and at work on more for Motion, similarly has posted free goodies for FCP at his site, www.nattress.com/Free/free.htm

Most plug-ins are available for download at the indicated company URLs. But if you’re looking to buy in bulk, the best clearing houses online are the After Effects reseller and plug-in specialist Toolfarm, and the newer Pluginz.com. You can search both by plug-in name, host application, process (effects, editing, etc.) and even most popular, and download directly from e-commerce sections of both sites often featuring special pricing and periodic deals. Other great links online include Plug-in Pavilion (pluginpavilion.com), which gives you direct links to developers’ sites.
