Weingartner, an expert on the actions of Waffen SS soldiers during the Battle of the Bulge in 1944, has produced an engrossing account of Willis M. Everett, an Atlanta attorney who saved those selfsame Germans from execution after the war. In seeking social prominence in the interwar years, Everett obtained an army reserve officer's commission, which earned him rapid promotions after 1941 in the Judge Advocate General's Corps.
